Excellent pilot, great potential
19 March 2017 | by (Berlin) – See all my reviews

Often the pilot episodes of new shows do not reach the level of the fully developed series episodes, but the Oasis pilot already has a lot to offer and builds up an intriguing setting. There are a couple of reminiscences of "Solaris" and also of "Dune", and it will be very interesting to see how the narrative develops further. Also, even within the framework of a pilot episode, which often rushes from scene to scene, we see fairly good acting, and the actors are here and there given some moments of stillness with their characters and room to unfold more emotional and spiritual depth. This provides an interesting psychological spectrum with a great potential for a series. I very much hope that this will be turned into a series. The pilot suggests that a full series would be definitely worth viewing.

Update as of July 2017: Meanwhile, I am regrettably doubtful if Oasis will go into series production. The reasons for having doubts, as I see it, are: (1) Amazon Video only produce a fraction of their pilots, and out of the 2017 pilot season, they have already picked the "...Mrs Maizel" pilot for production. (2) It is the case that "Oasis" got very high rating reactions from viewers, but it seems that Amazon Video pays more attention to ratings from professional critics, and while they have been rather good, one must realize that they haven't been as enthusiastic as the audience's reaction by far. One of the aims of Amazon Video is to be able to win awards with their programs, so the reaction by critics matters to them quite a bit, and probably more than the response by the audience. (3) The plot seems to deviate from Faber's book already in the pilot episode to some degree, signalizing that disagreements between the screenwriters and the novel author about the development of the story line and characters could be coming up. (4) It is unlikely that the three lead actors (Madden, Kapoor, Traue) are left uncertain over a long time about the filming schedule for a series which involves being on set in Africa as they are likely, in the meantime, to pick up other offers that would clash with the filming of the series. Yet, none of the lead actors has announced that the series would be produced. However, one would expect they would do that in case of decision for production as it increases their market value. (5) The visuals and set layout of Oasis might incur higher production costs than usual for an Amazon Video series and it may be that Amazon Video is shying away from that, given that the critics' response is not completely enthusiastic.

Well, I really hope I am all wrong with those thoughts and the series will be produced.
