Convicted of a decade old crime of transporting drug money to an ex-girlfriend, normally law abiding Piper Chapman is sentenced to a year and a half behind bars to face the reality of how life changing prison can really be.
Adventurer James Keziah Delaney returns to London during the War of 1812 to rebuild his late father's shipping empire. However, both the government and his biggest competitor want his inheritance at any cost - even murder.
While Madeline and Celeste take new in town single mom Jane under their wing, none of them realises how the arrival of Jane and her inscrutable little boy will affect them all. Big Little Lies is a brilliant take on ex-husbands and second wives, schoolyard scandal, and the dangerous little lies we tell ourselves just to survive. Written by
"Avenue Q," the theatrical production that Madeline is working on (and trying to advocate for in the face of community objections) is a real musical, and, as described in the show, really performed with puppets. The real "Avenue Q" had a very successful Broadway run (from 2003 to 2009) and won the so-called "Triple Crown" of Tony Awards (Best Musical, Best Book of a Musical, and Best Original Score) in 2004. The New York production moved to the off-Broadway New World Stages in 2009, where (as of August 2017) it has been running ever since. Although the show contains puppets, it was never intended for children, so given all the awards, critical acclaim, and financial success garnered by the musical over the years, in the context of "Big Little Lies," Renata's objections are meant to be seen as baseless and vindictive. I am a big fan of Liane Moriarty and when I read this book I couldn't put it down. Reese Witherspoon has done the book justice as I understand she has produced the series.
It's not often you read a book and the pictures that you form in your mind suddenly become real through a great translation to the screen. Although the book was originally set on the Northern beaches of Sydney the translation to Monterey California is perfect. David E Kelly has written the screenplay and has done an excellent job and dare I say taken a great story and enhanced it beautifully.
The casting is absolutely perfect with Reese as Maddy, Nicole Kidman as Celeste, Laura Dern as Renata and Shailene as Jane. Great choice with Zoe Kravitz as well.
Any parent and especially any mother will really relate to the story which keeps you guessing until the very end. AAA+++
