Hit-man Saleh Bakri spares the life of blind Sara Serraiocco
19 April 2016 | by (United States) – See all my reviews

Saleh Bakri plays a hit-man names Salvo in "Salvo" (2013). This film is far from conventional in several ways. It uses as little dialog as possible, and its pacing is sometimes almost as slow as Bela Tarr's. It seems to be an enigmatic movie because it doesn't overtly explain what happens. However, we as viewers can pretty much tell what's going on and why it's happening the way it does. The movie develops a good deal of tension. Because the movie is unconventional, some viewers who expect something more mainstream will experience disappointment. I believe we should accept movies on their own artistic terms. On this basis, this is a good movie.

Story is at the heart of any movie or most movies, I should say, and this is a good story that's put across effectively. It's original. The idea of a blind victim is a device that cleverly launches the hit-man into a new set of feelings and drives the story. Her reactions to him, the man who killed her brother, then adds another layer of interest.

I'd class "Salvo" as neo-noir and as part of the substantial hit-man sub-genre on which I've commented in other reviews of movies with hit men at their core. This sub-genre almost always assures an interesting story by making a hit-man the central character. Because murder is morally wrong, this choice of central character or protagonist or "hero" automatically raises questions, such as state of mind, the psychology of it, the possibility of redemption, guilt, and so on.

In "Salvo" (2013), the murderer is somewhat Christ-like in one important respect. He helps cure a blind girl (Sara Serraiocco) of her blindness. This is a girl whose life he has spared after killing her brother. He has abducted her and hidden her so that his Mafia boss will not know he's saved her, but the boss catches on nonetheless and hunts Salvo down. How can Salvo cure blindness? Christ mixed spit with dirt and rubbed it over the blind man's eyes. It is now known that this can effect a cure if the blindness is due to some obstruction of the eye that can be physically removed. We need to understand that Salvo physically did something similar to the girl, Rita. This happens at the 26-minute mark when he places his hands over her face and eyes strongly. It is right after that when she sees light and vague outlines of his face; before that she saw nothing.

This cure is part of the theme that he pities the girl, pity leads to love, and love leads to redemption. The girl's helplessness causes him to experience disorientation and even bewilderment. Why must he kill her? He questions his role and his task and his life and his job. He changes. He disobeys the boss. This is shown. It's not developed verbally.

The film is dark. It's perhaps too dark in some places; but on the other hand it's using natural lighting at night and in a sequence where darkness is of the essence of the action that's occurring. It needs the right degree of brightness to see some action; this can be done on home viewing. In some theater showings or DVD players, one could miss action that undermines the feelings meant to be conveyed.

This is a rewarding movie, but again it's poles apart from Hollywood style.
