Box Office: ‘Kingsman: The Golden Circle’ and ‘The Lego Ninjago Movie’ Are Top Openers

10 hours ago | Indiewire | See recent Indiewire news »

Things are looking up at the fall box office: for the first time three September releases grossed over $20 million. The average September usually sees one or two performing at this level. Even with poor reviews, sequel “Kingsman: The Golden Circle” (20th Century Fox) managed to nearly reach $40 million. It was joined by a strong third weekend for horror phenomenon “It” (Warner Bros.) at $30 million, and the opening of “The Lego Ninjago Movie” (also Warners) at just over $20 million.

Despite the improvement over last year — box office up $15 million, or about 14 per cent — the fall-off from last year is still just under five per cent. That’s better than the 6.3 per cent drop at the end of August. But the uphill climb to equal last year’s box office (with slightly higher prices this year meaning an even bigger gap in ticket buyers) still quite steep.

Kingsman 2 Beats It at the Box Office with $39M

11 hours ago | MovieWeb | See recent MovieWeb news »

As expected, after two weekends of box office dominance, New Line Cinema's It remake was finally dethroned. While it came in far lower than most projections, 20th Century Fox's Kingsman: The Golden Circle took the top spot at the box office with $39 million. Also as expected, Kingsman 2 easily beat its fellow newcomers The Lego Ninjago Movie and Friend Request, although they both came in far lower than most projections.

Box Office Mojo reports that Kingsman 2 opened in 4,003 theaters for a solid $9,743 per-screen average. While some had projected it to open in the $50 million range, the Kingsman sequel still managed to out-gross its predecessor, which opened with $36.2 million en route to a $128.2 million domestic debut and $414.3 million worldwide from an $81 million budget. The sequel was produced under a $104 million budget, but with its $61.2 million foreign debut, for a worldwide tally of $100.2 million, it's already very close to breaking even. »

Box Office Roundup: ‘Kingsman’ Takes the Crown

11 hours ago | Age of the Nerd | See recent Age of the Nerd news »

After two weeks on top, Kingsman: The Golden Circle has topped the juggernaut hit It.  While the Kingsman sequel earned enough to take the top spot, the film performed under expectations.  Kingsman: The Golden Circle brought in an estimated $39 million domestically in its opening weekend.  The original Kingsman earned $36.2 in its opening weekend domestically ($128.2 million in total in the States)) and $414 million worldwide back in 2015.  The numbers seem on par with the original, so it will be interesting to see how Kingsman: The Golden Circle performs in the coming weeks both domestically and internationally.

It continues to rake in the money, finishing second at the box office this weekend earning an estimated $30 million.  So far, It has earned an impressive $266 million.  Even with well-known franchises and interesting releases, It continues to rake in the money.

The other big release of the weekend was The ‘Lego Ninjango’ Movie, which underperformed in all respects, »

'Kingsman 2' Finishes #1 as September Grosses Near Record High

13 hours ago | Box Office Mojo | See recent news »

The weekend's new releases fell shy of Mojo's weekend forecast, but Kingsman: The Golden Circle still managed to debut larger than the original, finishing in the #1 spot. Unfortunately, The Lego Ninjago Film fell well short of expectations as did Friend Request, which delivered a mere $2.4 million opening. There were, however, some bright spots among limited release titles as Battle of the Sexes and Victoria and Abdul delivered strong opening results as September's calendar grosses continue to pace toward record heights. Topping the box office was Fox's Kingsman: The Golden Circle, delivering an estimated $39 million from 4,003 theaters. The opening improves on the $36.2 million opening for the first film, but the film's performance over the next couple of weeks will tell the true story. The first Kingsman turned its $36 million debut into a $128 million domestic run, a 3.54x multiplier. Should Golden Circle follow suit we're talking about a $138+ million domestic run, which »

Box Office: ‘Kingsman: The Golden Circle’ Unseats ‘It’ as ‘Lego Ninjago’ Disappoints

Kingsman: The Golden Circle” is the new ruler of the box office.

The sequel from Fox is expected to earn $39 million this weekend from 4,003 locations. That’s slightly below where tracking had pegged it (somewhere in the $40 millions), but above the original “Kingsman” movie, which earned $36.2 million when it opened in 2015.

“Kingsman” is also launching to about $61 million from 64 markets abroad, giving it a $100 million worldwide opening. The audience was male-dominated (58%) and 60% of viewers were between 18 and 34 years old. The sequel received mixed reviews (a 51% score on Rotten Tomatoes), and audiences earned it a B+ CinemaScore, which is the same as the original “Kingsman.” Imax screens accounted for $3.5 million of “Kingsman’s” domestic earnings and $9.2 million of its global grosses.

Film Review: ‘Kingsman: The Golden Circle

Box Office: ‘Kingsman: The Golden Circle’ Dominates With $40 Million

23 September 2017 7:47 AM, PDT | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

Spy comedy “Kingsman: The Golden Circle” is heading for a solid $40 million opening weekend at 4,003 North American sites, estimates showed Saturday.

The third weekend of horror blockbuster “It” continues to scare up impressive business with a projected $30 million at 4,007 locations, followed by the launch of Warner Bros.’ animated comedy “The Lego Ninjago Movie” with about $21 million at 4,047 locations — well under recent forecasts. Still, with three films over $20 million, the overall box office represents a continued rebound for the movie business following a dismal late summer.

Independent horror movie “Friend Request” is showing little traction in its launch weekend with an estimated $2.2 million at 2,550 venues. Jake Gyllenhaal’s “Stronger,” a biopic on Boston Marathon bombing survivor Jeff Bauman, is opening with a moderate $1.6 million at 574 sites for Roadside Attractions.

Fox’s “Kingsman: The Golden Circle” is performing in line with expectations, two years after “Kingsman: The Secret Service.” The sequel brings back original stars Taron Egerton, Colin Firth »

Sanaa Lathan Says It's 'So Cool' She Was Cast in a Role That Was Written As a White Character

22 September 2017 11:07 AM, PDT | | See recent news »

Sanaa Lathan was pleasantly surprised that elements of her Broadway experience came into play when she auditioned for American Assassin, the spy thriller based on Vince Flynn’s book series.

“I come from the theater and do colorblind casting,” the actress, 46, tells People in this week’s issue. “One of the things I loved about my Assassin character, Irene, is in the books, she’s white. It’s so cool that they hired an African-American woman. I’m really interested in seeing movies that start to reflect the world that we live in.”

'Kingsman' and 'LEGO Ninjago' Ready to Add to September's Record Pace

21 September 2017 1:20 PM, PDT | Box Office Mojo | See recent news »

September 2017 is currently pacing 15.6% ahead of 2016 with a calendar gross of $467.3 million, putting the month on a record pace, $48 million ahead of where 2015 was at the same time period before delivering $626.4 million, the largest September calendar gross ever. Almost half of September's total at this point is thanks to Warner Bros. and New Line's It, which is looking to do strong numbers again this weekend, but will fall from its #1 perch after two straight weeks on top. Debuting in wide release this weekend is Fox's Kingsman: The Golden Circle and it should have enough juice to take the weekend top spot while Warner Animation Group's The LEGO Ninjago Movie is looking to finish in the runner-up position. Entertainment Studios' is going social with the R-rated horror Friend Request debuting in just over 2,500 theaters and likely to finish in the top five (albeit with minimal returns) while Roadside Attractions is »

Box Office: Can ‘Kingsman’ or ‘Lego Ninjago’ Knock ‘It’ From Top Spot?

20 September 2017 5:44 PM, PDT | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

This is, without a doubt, an unusually strong September at the box office.

The thanks go mostly to “It,” which charged out of the starting gate for Warner Bros. and New Line as a record-breaking hit two weekends ago with $123 million domestic. Last weekend it easily stayed on top of the North American charts with $60 million. But now, Pennywise the clown has tough competition from two new releases — Fox’s “Kingsman: The Golden Circle,” and “The Lego Ninjago Movie” from Warner Bros.

The sequel to “Kingsman: The Secret Service” looks like the leader of the pack. It’s tracking with a wide-ish margin in the $40 millions from more than 4,000 locations. That would be an improvement on the original, which had a domestic opening of $36.2 million. Foreign grosses boosted the first “Kingsman” to become a global hit, and it finished its run with $414.4 million worldwide. So B.O. observers should look abroad for the second go-around as well »

‘Kingsman: The Golden Circle’ Again Tops Studios’ TV Ad Spending

19 September 2017 10:06 PM, PDT | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

In this week’s edition of the Variety Movie Commercial Tracker, powered by the TV advertising attention analytics company, Twentieth Century Fox claims the top spot in spending for the second week in a row with “Kingsman: The Golden Circle.”

Ads placed for the action comedy had an estimated media value of $7 million through Sunday for 1,533 national ad airings across 32 networks. (Spend figures are based on estimates generated from Sept. 11-17. Estimates may be updated after the chart is posted as new information becomes available.) Twentieth Century Fox continued to target a sports-loving audience with significant budget allocated to NFL Football and College Football, as well as episodes of “South Park” and “Family Guy.”

Just behind “Kingsman: The Golden Circle” in second place: Warner Bros. Animations’ “The Lego Ninjago Movie,” which saw 1,306 national ad airings across 48 networks, with an estimated media value of $5.95 million.

Box Office Democracy: American Assassin

19 September 2017 4:00 PM, PDT | | See recent Comicmix news »

I don’t really know what it’s like to be an actor and even less what it’s like to be an aging actor, but I have to wonder what made Michael Keaton take this role in American Assassin.  He signed on to play this role after being nominated for an Oscar for Birdman and having wrapped production on The Founder, so he had done two big meaty acting roles in a row and he chose…this.  Maybe the money was too good (and he didn’t know he would sign to be The Vulture a month later), maybe the phone just isn’t ringing off the hook for older actors if you aren’t in the Clooney-tier.  American Assassin is a bad movie and it makes Keaton look like a dime store Liam Neeson.  He should be doing better things than this, everyone in this movie should. Can Kingsman 2 or Ninjago Take Down It at the Box Office?

19 September 2017 10:00 AM, PDT | MovieWeb | See recent MovieWeb news »

While the It had no trouble repeating atop the box office for a second straight frame in a row last weekend, it doesn't seem that it will be going for a three-peat, with three new movies vying for the crown in wide release, 20th Century Fox's action-packed sequel Kingsman: The Golden Circle, Warner Bros.' Lego Movie spin-off The Lego Ninjago Movie and Entertainment Studios' horror-thriller Friend Request. While it very well could be a close race, we're predicting that Ninjago will come out on top with $55.6 million, while Kingsman 2 will follow just behind with $52.4 million.

Box Office Mojo reports that both Kingsman 2 and Ninjago will be released in roughly 3,900 theaters, with Friend Request opening in roughly 3,000 theaters. All of those movies will still fall short of the 4,138 theaters that the blockbuster It remake was playing in last weekend, but after a record-breaking opening weekend, and a normal second-weekend drop, »

Box Office Weekend: It Holds Top Spot

The horror film It topped the box office again this week with $60 million. The two-week total for the film fell just short of $220 million but has established the Stephen King adaptation as the highest grossing September release of all time. In a distant second-place was American Assassin with $14.8 million in its first week of release.

Darren Aronofsky’s mother! finished in third with $7.5 million in its initial week of release and has apparently not been winning audiences over despite the presence of star Jennifer Lawrence. Meanwhile, the Reese Witherspoon comedy Home Again brought in $5.3 million to bring its two-week total to $17.1, which was good enough to hold fourth place this week. The Hitman’s Bodyguard brought its five-week total to $70.4 million with $3.6 million this weekend, which held fifth place for it.
