Comics on Film: 'Justice League' Is Gleeful, Beautiful Mayhem

17 November 2017 3:00 PM, PST

It was right around the halfway point during a preliminary fight between our heroes and the film's antagonist that it really began to sink in: this movie is a blast to watch. Coming off of a legendary and arduously troubled production that seemed to have just as many twists and turns behind the camera as it does in front of it, a lot of people in both the circles of fans and of critics seemed to already make up their minds about Warner Bros. Pictures and DC Films' ambitious team-up film, Justice League, quite a while ago. And really, who could blame them? In addition to having to change directors and composers on top of an extensive schedule of reshoots and creative patches, the film being good was quite a longshot. Sometimes, though, some perceived plotholes...

'Multiple Man': James Franco and James Franco and James Franco to Star in 'X-Men' Spin-off

17 November 2017 1:00 PM, PST

There's an ongoing joke about how James Franco has found a way to duplicate himself. That's how he's able to work on so many projects. His recent stint on the HBO series The Deuce allowed for the joke to seem to be truth. On the show, he acts opposite himself, playing twin brothers. Now it's even further being played with in the announceent (via Deadline) that Franco will star in an X-Men spin-off about the Marvel Comics character Multiple Man. Jamie Madrox is the mutant superhero's real name. He was born with the gift and hardship of duplication. Basically, he can create many clones of himself, which comes in handy when you need an army-sized team to defeat a villain. In the comics, Multiple Man became best known as a member of X-Factor in...

Watch: The Merc With a Mouth Channels His Inner Artist in Nsfw 'Deadpool 2' Teaser

15 November 2017 1:00 PM, PST

You want to show fans a teaser, but there's not enough finished footage to fill much time, so what do you do? What would Deadpool do? In the case of the first look at his upcoming movie sequel, he offers a little skit spoofing iconic PBS painting show host Bob Ross. This is an R-rated parody, by the way, so hide your children, even those who might actually appreciate a send up of The Joy of Painting and punny color names like "Doc Brown," "Mennen Black" and "Betty White."  Fans wanting to see actual clips from Deadpool 2 as opposed to or in addition to Ryan Reynolds in costume plus afro wig, there is a very quick montage. We see Deadpool with guns, Negasonic Teenage Warhead (Brianna Hildebrand) with a new hairdo, other returning...

'Super Mario Bros.' Will Be Animated for Next Movie Adaptation

15 November 2017

Nintendo, one of the biggest video game companies in history, hasn't bothered with movie adaptations for almost 25 years. Since the failure of 1993's live-action Super Mario Bros. starring Bob Hoskins, John Leguizamo and Dennis Hopper, there's been little to no interest to try again. Rumors have circulated in recent years about deals with Disney or general plans for big screen versions of its properties. But we're now on the verge of something real happening. And again it involves the Mario brand.  According to the Wall Street Journal (via io9), Nintendo is nearing a deal with Universal Pictures and the animation studio Illumination Entertainment, makers of the Minions (via the Despicable Me trilogy and spin-off), plus recent...

Awards Buzz: Hugh Jackman Stars in 'Greatest Showman' Trailer; Could He Be Nominated?

13 November 2017 7:00 PM, PST

Hugh Jackman already stars in one of the best movies of the year, the X-Men spin-off Logan, and he gives a fine performance there. But the Oscars don't tend to recognize superhero movies. The Academy does have a history of loving big musicals, however. Therefore, The Greatest Showman might be Jackman's better chance of earning his latest nomination.  He stars as circus pioneer P.T. Barmum in the song-and-dance-filled biopic, opposite Michelle Williams as first wife Charity and Zac Efron as a fictional collaborator. Not only is the genre a positive for the Academy's notice, but the original songs are by the Oscar-winning La La Land duo Justin Paul and Benj Pasek. Watch the second trailer to see Jackman and hear the...
