‘Empire’s’ Season 4 Premiere Celebrates a 20th Anniversary and a Recovering Lucious

25 September 2017 11:00 AM, PDT | Variety - TV News | See recent Variety - TV News news »

When Fox’s “Empire” ended last season, Lyon family patriarch Lucious (Terrence Howard) was just waking up from a coma after almost getting killed by a car bomb. Though he survived the attack physically, he lost his memories of his family and of himself. When the show returns for its fourth season, it’s three months later and he still doesn’t have his memory back, but the family is pushing on with their business – and a milestone with the 20th anniversary of their company.

“It really sets the template for the season,” showrunner Ilene Chaiken tells Variety about the anniversary celebration that will open the premiere. “In this episode, it serves as the framework for telling the story of where Lucious is and what it means to everyone.”

Chaiken says the premiere will also see a break in format, in order to better tell this story. The episode “book-ends” the story by starting the action at »

‘Empire’ Season 4 to Reduce Guest Stars, Refocus on the Lyon Family

8 August 2017 12:59 PM, PDT | Variety - TV News | See recent Variety - TV News news »

“Empire’s” third season left off on a yet another tragic note for the Lyon family after Lucious (Terrence Howard) was caught in an explosion for which his own family set him up. Without his memory of who his family is, he is relying on his caretaker (guest star Demi Moore) to heal him back to health. While Moore will be an important part of the fourth season, though, executive producers Lee Daniels, Ilene Chaiken, and Sanaa Hamri say the new episodes will see a return to the core of the show, the Lyon family and dynasty.

“When we start to focus too much on guest stars we lose who it is that the fans want to watch,” Daniels says, noting he pays attention to what the audience of the show is saying about the show. “They’re obsessed with the Lyons. They’re obsessed with family. They’re obsessed with the story of Lucious and Cookie »

‘Empire’ Kills off Another Cast Member — and Who’s the Murderer? (Spoilers)

17 May 2017 10:00 PM, PDT | Variety - TV News | See recent Variety - TV News news »

Spoiler Alert: Do not read ahead if you have not watched the episode of “Empire” which aired on Wednesday, May 17.

“Empire” is no stranger to saying goodbye to major characters, and the Fox show did it again, killing off the main antagonist of Season 3: Tariq (Morocco Omari), who was stabbed in the neck by none other than Lucious’ mother, Leah Walker (Leslie Uggams.)

Earlier in the episode, Lucious (Terrence Howard) and his half-brother Tariq had finally made up, after a long history of hating each other. Lucious enlisted Tariq’s help to find his granddaughter, Hakeem’s (Bryshere Gray) baby girl, Bella, and Tariq was successful in finding her — with the Dubois family, a.k.a. Cookie’s (Taraji P. Henson) former flame, Angelo (Taye Diggs), and his nutso mother, Diana (Phylicia Rashad).

Moments before Wednesday’s episode ended, Tariq sat down with Lucious to tell him that he found Bella, who »

When Rumer Willis’ Tory Ash debuted in Empire's midseason premiere, it didn't take long for her troubled past to surface.

When she was introduced as Jamal's (Jussie Smollett) newest and closest rehab confidante, both Hakeem (Bryshere Y. Gray) and Cookie (Taraji P. Henson) quickly began discussing the heroin-induced meltdown that led to her stripping naked at Fenway Park before she was later found in a coma in a seedy motel.

"She was a big star, brilliant too," said Cookie. "But that heroin knocked her ass right out of the sky."
